Kenora is a much sought after site for all levels of Medical Learners.
As a NOSMU teaching site, our students are offered unique learning experiences in Rural Medicine. We have preceptors in Rural Family Medicine including with and in the First Nation communities, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Psychiatry, Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, and more!
We welcome Physician Assistant, Rehabilitation Sciences, Registered Dietician, Nursing, Laboratory, Diagnostic Imaging, and other Healthcare students!
The Lake of the Woods Health Sciences Campus in affiliation with NOSMU delivers engaging skill-building opportunities. We are proud of our fulsome, inter-professional learning environment. The SIMULATION LAB at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital provides a great experience for interactive hands-on learning.

Undergrad Medical Education (UME)
Kenora hosts third year medical students for an 8-month Comprehensive Community Clerkship (CCC) during NOSMU’s Phase 2. Students are paired up with Medical Preceptors and participate in a wide range of clinical learning activities in primary care clinics, in the communities, and at Lake of the Woods District Hospital.
During their Clerkship year, the medical students are encouraged to become active and involved members of the community.
The integrated exposure to various specialties and subspecialties in this Phase provides students with the opportunity to assess specialty areas that they may choose to pursue as a future career. In this Phase, there are opportunities to experience medicine in different settings through elective experiences, many of which can also occur in Kenora by request.
Post-Graduate Education (PGE)
Medical Students interested in experiencing full-scope Rural Family Medicine are able to apply for a MATCH through CaRMs (prospective residents/how to apply). NOSMU has a “Rural stream” with Kenora as a host site for the 2-year longitudinal Family Medicine residency.
Our residents are given access to several different family medicine practice profiles during their Family Medicine blocks with the option to stay with us for electives. They can also do electives in other communities to have a unique learning experience. Medical Learners can contact us for more information on these opportunities, however all applications for elective rotations must be processed through the NOSMU education portal.

LIVE THE LAKE LIFE
Located on Lake of the Woods, Kenora is a four-season tourist destination, highlighting “Lake Life” at its finest. From boating and swimming in the summertime, to year-round fishing and hiking, as an outdoor enthusiast you have nature in your backyard!
The Kenora area is filled with countless recreation activities, indoor and out!
WINTER AT ITS FINEST
Winter activities include cross-country and downhill skiing with tubing at Mount Evergreen, Biathlon, snowmobiling, ice fishing, snowshoeing and more. Few things are more exciting than pulling a Lake of the Woods walleye out of the hole in the deep of winter!
There are local hockey leagues (competitive and house) as well as skating, curling, Crokicurl, ice bikes, and more. We don’t hibernate in winter — we celebrate it!

The other three seasons are spent enjoying the number of lakes and pristine forests, including the Lake of the Woods Yacht club and the rowing club at Rabbit Lake. Kenora hosts one of the largest Bass Fishing Tournaments, called KBI and local music during the summer including Kenora Harbourfest.
Housing for learners is a coordinated partnership between NOSMU and LWDH with many locations located on beautiful Lake of the Woods.

The Moncrief Construction Sports Center is a phenomenal facility, with an ice surface, swimming pool, sauna, walking track, exercise classes, and huge fitness center, where all of our learners have free access. And with a wealth of local coffee shops and cuisine, summer and winter music festivals and fishing tournaments, Kenora is a hidden gem calling your name.

Medical Learners have the opportunity to learn about community partnerships such as Kenora Chiefs Advisory Wellness Camp and Equine Therapy program, including meeting Ojibway Spirit Horses.

ORNGE HELICOPTER TRANSPORT
Kenora is home to 1 of 6 ORNGE Emergency Transport bases in the northwest.
A vital part of Ontario’s health care system, Ornge provides high quality air ambulance service and medical transport to people who are ill or injured. In the air and on the ground, ORNGE is there for patients, so they can get where they need to be.
Learners may have the opportunity to accompany our Medical Director into the ORNGE control center, and learn about the importance of rapid transport in rural communities.
